Catch me if you can...

It's great to sit at a bar, enjoying a drink and watch the world go by...

It's not so easy though to catch our Mancunian cyclists, who 'thanks to' that 'amazing' cycling infrastructure *insert level of sarcasm in here* have to dash to avoid being squeezed by traffic...

Looking good nonetheless on a lovely vintage ride.

We have a long way to go till we can compare ourselves to this:

  1. Assuming he's a young, fit student type that cyclist in the top pic should be behind the
Magic Bus, not creeping in the gutter.

If he's older, say 40+ and not quite as fast, then he should be in the middle of the nearside lane.

Assertive riding is the safest way to go.

  2. No, it's not, I would disagree wholeheartedly there. Cycling should be a viable option for everyone, it should not discriminate the everyday cyclist from the few who are cocky enough to want to ride assertively. You might just as well as replace that latter word with 'aggressively'.

It is so daft and sad to think that someone on a bike would want to equal a car or bus engine. With that kind of attitude we will never allow cycling to be a viable mode of transport in our cities for the majority of the population.

  3. In a sense, both of you are right. Given what we have to put up with at the moment, you need to take control of the road and be as assertive as any other vehicle but what a sad state of affairs that is, because it's dependent on the car/bus/taxi drivers respecting that assertiveness and there's absolutely no guarantee of that, so the only guarantee of safety is to separate us from the rest of the traffic, which I'm assuming is the point of the blog.

  4. I find it stunning just how assertive the average female, basket on the front of the bike, wind in the hair, well dressed cyclist can be along Oxford Road.

The magic bus is no match for the well turned out cyclist :)
